Overview

Edward S. Mocarski, Jr. received an A.B. from Rutgers University in 1974 and a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 1979, both degrees in microbiology. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in virology at The University of Chicago with Dr. Bernard Roizman in 1982. Dr. Mocarski joined Stanford University in 1983 and was Chairman of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at Stanford University School of Medicine as well as Associate Dean of Research within Stanford Universitys Provosts Office. He retired from Stanford and became Professor Emeritus when he joined the faculty at Emory University School of Medicine in 2006 as Robert W. Woodruff Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and the Emory Vaccine Center. He was Distinguished Fellow at MedImmune, LLC, where he managed an expansion of vaccine pipeline research with particular attention to herpes viruses, including cytomegalovirus. He returned to Emory as a full-time faculty member in 2011.

Research
Dr. Mocarskis research focuses on all aspects of the biology and pathogenesis of cytomegalovirus (CMV), an opportunistic herpesvirus; in particular, on integrating biochemical, molecular, cellular and intact animal approaches to investigate the biological properties of this virus and its close relatives. He has made key contributions to the identification of replication functions, latent reservoir in myelomonocytic progenitors, immunomodulatory functions, and cellular response to viral infection. His research has opened dramatic new understanding of cell death pathways in host defense and development. He is an internationally recognized leader in research on CMV and broadly knowledgeable in the area of herpesviruses and host control of viral infection. Dr. Mocarski has received many honors. He serves on the editorial boards of Virology, Journal of Biological Chemistry and Journal of Virology, and is a manuscript reviewer for numerous prominent journals. He has been a member on many national and international panels. He has served on international organizing committees of major conferences and herpesvirus workshops. He is the author and coauthor of more than 140 peer-reviewed articles; other publications include review articles and book chapters; and he is coauthor and editor of the major textbook, Human Herpesviruses: Biology, Therapy and Immunoprophylaxis (Cambridge Press, Cambridge, 2007), now accessible through PubMed.
